CONTENT: The still preserved calf of the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) was brought back from South Africa to Sweden in 1776 and donated to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Sparrman refers to it in his donation letter to the Academy as “Hippopotamus, dess calf N:B helt” [= Hippopotamus, its calf, N.B. complete.]. At the entry for Hippopotamus amphibius in the museum catalogue from 1788 by Hornstedt, it has been added by Sparrman’s hand “Nyfödd” [= newborn]. It is currently (2018) on display at the Swedish Museum of Natural History.
