Hi there!
The 2022 calendar from The IK Foundation has the title SUBMERGED LANDSCAPES and is illustrated with a unique underwater picture of the remains of an ancient forest. The tree stump is the residue of the first vegetation established in northern Europe after the last ice age. Large parts of the Baltic Sea, among other sea areas, were such early landscapes. Today, these root residues can still be found in the depths of the Baltic Sea, where they were submerged from 13 000 to 12 000 years ago.
SUBMERGED LANDSCAPES | CALENDAR YEAR 2022 & BOOKLIST. With the very first picture of a pine (Pinus sylvestris) at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, in the same place where the sprouting of a seed in a landscape that was a land area about 12 000 years ago – now submerged by Nature's eternal cycles. The pictures and films of this very early and extensive fieldwork in the 1980s, in fact, came to be the foundation of The IK Foundation, which, for several years, led studies in both the Baltic and the North Sea, to increase our knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the first landscapes of North Europe. By sea-based surveys and sampling with both divers and heavy measuring apparatus, followed-up with laboratory analyses of organic, geological and archaeological material. In this interdisciplinary research, we then got a more detailed picture of how quickly the landscape can change from natural causes and how flora, fauna and humans had to adapt to the visible changes that sometimes occurred over a few generations of human beings.
Besides the fact that the depiction of a 12 000-year-old submerged pine is a unique scientific picture, it also tells a story about how Nature's cycles have affected the history of our planet and culture – something it will continue to do as long as it exists as a planet. However, at these times of misinformation, alarmism, overpopulation, old and new environmental degradation and the depletion of biospheres, we should instead consider what right humanity has to look solely to its own advantage, and to think long-term about the responsibility each individual has for our joint Planet Earth!
We wish you and yours all the very best for the year ahead.
