| CONTENT: | Shortly after Daniel Rolander’s departure from Uppsala on a natural history journey towards Suriname in 1754, he passed through his birth place Stibbetorp to visit his elderly parents, where he arrived at 10 November and stayed for eight days. He described his initial experience in the journal: ‘I arrived at Stibbetorp, a farm in the parish of Helleberga situated at a distance of seven leagues from Växjö and some forty-four leagues from Stockholm. This is my place of birth…’ As it was almost winter at the time for his visit, Rolander foremost noted his memories – over several manuscript pages – from when studied insects and plants during summers in his younger years. This photograph taken in August is believed to be the exact location for the small farmstead where he was born in 1723 or 1725. There are some uncertainty of his family circumstances and early years and furthermore due to missing parish records in Stibbetorp dating 1758-1780, it has not been possible to search for his parents or possible siblings for this period. However, it is not believed that Daniel Rolander (1723/1725-1793) returned to the geographical province of his childhood after this visit in 1754. |
