KALM AND THE HUDSON RIVER
New York Now and Then

The Hudson River has a significant function for transport and trade in New York today, but the river held even greater importance for all sorts of commerce and travel in supporting the 18th century citizen and visitor. Kalm made for example several observations of the subject and on November 2, 1748 he wrote in his diary: ‘New York probably carries on a more extensive commerce, than any town in the English North American provinces; at least it may be said to equal them: Boston and Philadelphia however come very near up to it. The trade of New York extends to many places, and it is said they send more shops from thence to London, than they do from Philadelphia. They export to that capital all the various sorts of skins which they buy of the Indians, sugar, logwood, and other dying woods, rum, mahogany, and many other goods which are the produce of the West Indies; together with all the species which they get in the course of trade…’ In his "Travel Account” he also noted several purchases connected to New York and the Hudson River. Including travelling expenses on the river, food, rent, material for his scientific work etc. One such occasion was on the 29 May in 1749 when paying ‘Accomodation for one week, £1. 8Sh.’ and on his visit the year before he paid a smaller sum to ‘The man, who “lighted” me home by the night’. New York was with other words a very dark place after sunset, without any sort of street lighting!
