CONTENT: This mid-18th century Dutch plan of the city Paramaribo on the coast of Surinam includes property lines and names of landowners. From the perspective of the Linnaeus Apostle, Daniel Rolander’s visit to the area in 1755, one of the many plantation owners stands out. It was the lieutenant colonel and plant collector Carl Gustaf Dahlberg (1720-1781), whose coffee plantation was marked with a ‘V. Dalbberg en Comp.’ Rolander mentioned Dahlberg’s plantation repeatedly in the journal; among many matters, he noted: ‘The plantations in these lands are brought down on one side or extremity to some river in order that the inhabitants may reach them by boats and so water can be channelled into the crops or drained out of them, according to the demands of necessity.’
